So Fresh and So Clean-Clean

"You must shampoo your hair at least
once a week, even more if you work out,
sweat a lot naturally, or have a chronic
scalp condition."
There is a chronic condition that I have noticed with a lot of my clients.  Initially, I ignored the symptoms thinking that the malady would pass but I finally had to start addressing the problem.  I never thought I would hear so many people say that . . .“I don’t do my own hair”

Some do not shampoo for weeks at a time and then complain about dry itchy scalp and/or dry hair.  Clients will ask what moisturizer and/or ‘hair grease’ they can use to help with the problem.  If your scalp is flaking, why on earth would you add something greasy to the mix?  Once you see flakes, it is time to shampoo, period.

This is basic hygiene.  You must shampoo your hair at least once a week, even more if you work out, sweat a lot naturally, or have a chronic scalp condition.  There is no excuse.  Clients must take responsibility for the health of their own hair and scalp.  Scalp is skin. Can you imagine going weeks without washing the skin on your body?

There are many technical and scientific concepts we can get into to explain how the scalp rejuvenates itself regularly and how that old scaly skin needs to be cleansed away to make room for the new.  I know it is a challenge but nothing beats the feeling of a fresh, clean scalp.

Normally, relaxed hair does not require a lot of product day to day.  A clarifying shampoo and some type deep conditioner should be used after each cleansing session.  If you use thermal tools, all you need is a small amount of heat protectant.  If you set, you simply need a good light leave in and/or an adjustable setting lotion.  For short hair you may need a light non-flaky gel and some type of mesh head wrap to hold down your edges as they dry.
Natural hair requires the same cleansing regimen as relaxed hair, but much more product and labor is needed to detangle, elongate, twist, coil, and style. I will cover more of this in a later post.

My next post will go over a few effective and reasonably priced products that will make caring for your hair at home less of a chore.
